Dog Training Supplies Checklist

• Flat collar with dog ID Tag - silent tag or traditional tag 

• Martingale collar - They tighten when a dog pulls but have a limited range that prevents them from tightening too much, unlike a slip lead. They are an escape-proof alternative that won't choke the dog and are a better alternative to standard flat collars. 

• 4-foot and 6-foot strong leash - Use a 4-foot leash for close control around distractions and a 6-foot leash for relaxed walks. Jonathan recommends skipping harnesses and head halters for training because they can encourage pulling and reduce precise control, unless your vet advises otherwise for a medical reason.

• Safety cord - attaches to second collar and leash in case leash is shaken off. Rader K9

• Treat pouch - make sure to clean it out after each training

• High value treats like cooked chicken or a portion of your dog's meal

• Clicker - Clicker training uses a distinct sound to mark the exact moment a dog performs a desired behavior. This clear communication helps your dog quickly understand what action earns a reward, accelerating the learning process. It is a positive reinforcement method that builds a strong bond and encourages your dog to engage confidently in training. 

• Placemat or elevated place board - This creates a clear, physical boundary for your dog, making it easier for them to understand and reliably perform commands like "place," "sit," and "stay". This defined space improves impulse control and focus, especially in distracting situations like when guests are visiting. By practicing on a designated board or mat, your dog learns to relax and remain calm, strengthening their overall obedience and giving them a secure "home base". • Crate - This is an excellent tool for dogs when used correctly as a safe, comfortable space that taps into a dog's natural "denning" instincts. Crate training offers numerous benefits for both dogs and their owners, including aid in house-training, providing a safe haven, and assisting with travel. • Slip lead with stopper - A slip lead with a stopper is beneficial for training aggressive dogs because it provides immediate, consistent feedback, applies pressure correctly to get their attention, and offers a way to secure a dog from a safe distance. The stopper prevents the lead from tightening excessively, which can cause injury, and allows for more control by keeping the lead positioned correctly on the dog's neck.) 

• Cage muzzle -  If your dog is aggressive, Jonathan will help you with muzzle training. A cage or basket muzzle is widely recommended over a soft muzzle for aggressive dogs because it is both safer and more humane for long-term use. A basket muzzle prevents a dog from biting while still allowing them to pant, drink water, and even take treats, which is essential for both comfort and effective training. A soft muzzle, in contrast, forces a dog's mouth shut and poses significant health risks. (Baskerville is great)

• SABRE Crossfire Pepper gel (if you live in an area with loose dogs) - Use pepper gel because unlike pepper spray, on a windy day, the pepper gel won’t blow back in your face. Yikes!

• Slow Feed Bowls - They slow down gulping and give your dog a little mental work at mealtime.

• Dual Side Shedding Blade - It removes loose fur quickly, which keeps your dog comfortable and your house cleaner.

• Nail Clippers - Regular trims keep your dog comfortable on walks, and handling the paws is good practice for dogs that are sensitive to touch. If your dog is sensitive about their paws, ask Jonathan before trying this at home.

• Kong - Stuff it with food, freeze it, and give it to your dog for about 15 minutes while you supervise. It gives your dog something calming to work on and burns off energy.
